My wife and I are Philadelphians. Hiking The Box Canyon Trail at Ghost Ranch was a rare opportunity for us to share a sense of family with our wonderful niece in New Mexico.
I visited Ghost Ranch as guests of Melinda Hess (my niece) and Pat Roberts last Fall. I remember nothing whatsoever about last Fall except Ghost Ranch and its environs. I have even forgotten what Melinda and Pat look like, but Ghost Ranch glistens still.
Why? Lets see. The sky and the clouds over the Ranch are astounding. The natural landscape, including the contours resulting from rock formation, the colors of the vegetation and soil and rocks, and primordial feeling of it all are staggering. The simplicity of the buildings, all in harmony with the natural setting. Idyllic, peaceful, meditative.
And the place seems to attract people who themselves are in harmony with the natural environment and with one another. I suppose that there may be a few crabs among them, but every one I saw looked contented and at ease. No tenseness or tensions. Low key.
Now, not all is the same at Ghost Ranch. I mean it is not homogenized, unvaried, uninteresting. You can walk 100 yards and go from one world into a completely different ecosystem. For example, one afternoon I walked down a trail and found myself on the way to Box Canyon. What a walk! Every several steps a different magnificent view. And watch your step or youll be in mud besides the creek or slip on a moss-covered creek stone and wind up with a wet tush. Wonderful, exciting, and you can take off a few pounds at the same time
My recommendation: GHO to Ghost Ranch. No one should miss this place."
