| Thanks! | Picuris- Peñasco Community: Honoring Our Elders, A Celebration of Life Project | |
| Each fall 13 elders from the Picuris- Peñasco community are selected for the Honoring Our Elders, A Celebration of Life project. Different elders are chosen each year, based on the oldest person in each village and their willingness to participate. The Picuris-Peñasco Community Coalition needs your help to compile a list of elders (75 years and up) from each of the following villages: Picuris, Peñasco, Llano (including Llano de San Juan), Rodarte (including Llano Largo, Llano de la Yegua), Vadito, Río Lucío, Placita, Tres Ritos, Chamisal (including Ojito, Vallecitos), Las Trampas, El Valle, Ojo Sarco, and Truchas. Please call David & Lisa Sipp, 587-2343 with your nominations or to volunteer yourself! Background What is the process? Students from Peñasco High School & Middle School develop questions, train in oral interview techniques and learn digital video and still camera skills. The project coordinator is Patricia Rodriguez, from Chamisal, who is completing her doctoral thesis with Case Western Reserve University on interviewing elders. Our video producer, Sheila Sullivan from Santa Fe, has a masters degree from the University of New Mexico. The interview crews travel to each elder's home and shoot about an hour of footage. The students participate in deciding which clips from each interview will go into the final hour-long documentary video featuring all of the elders. Students are given the opportunity to learn the video editing process. Each elder receives their own taped interview and a copy of the final product. The documentary is shown to the entire community free of charge at our local theatre. April 6, 2002 The project culminates in a festive community celebration honoring all elders and the student participants. This takes place at the Peñasco Independent Schools where a family style dinner is served to the elders and their families, followed by an open community celebration, complete with an emcee, entertainment, gift baskets for the elders, a dessert potluck and hors d'oeuvre table. Each fall elders from the 13 mountain villages of northern New Mexico that form the Picuris-Peñasco community are selected for this project. Different elders are chosen each year, based on the oldest person in each village and their willingness to participate. An Intergenerational Advisory Council is formed to offer guidance. The project culminates in a festive, bridge-building springtime community celebration honoring all elders and the student participants. This popular community event takes place on a Saturday and is held at the Peñasco Independent Schools. A family style dinner is served to the elders and their families, followed by an open community celebration, complete with an emcee, entertainment, gift baskets for the elders, a dessert potluck and hors d'oeuvre table. This phase of the project brings the whole community together with significant volunteer participation. Over 500 people attended both the April 2000 and April 2001 celebrations. In addition to providing students training in media literacy and in the development of research skills to collect data on important community issues, this project also addresses issues of intergenerational and cross-cultural communication and knowledge transfer, inclusion of the elders in the life of the community, and the formation of vital and authentic school-to-community connections. Partially funded by McCune Charitable Foundation and the NM Dept. of Health, Public Health Div. Top of Page | Home |

| The Picuris-Peñasco Community Coalition exists to share resources to help bridge the gaps in access to health care, educational support, and community building. To date, we are primarily addressing health and education, as well as community building issues through an annual Health & Wellness Fair and an annual Honoring Our Elders, A Celebration of Life video history project and celebration. Our first Health & Wellness Fair was held at Picuris Pueblo in October 1999 and was attended by more than 300 people. We built upon that success with our second Fair in November 2000 at the Peñasco Schools with over 400 attending. Our third Fair at Picuris Pueblo in October 2001 surpassed the first two with 450 people in attendance. The Health & Wellness Fair addresses health needs relevant to the residents of our rural area including nutrition, diabetes, safe drinking water, alternative and complementary medical information, physical exercise and recreation, mental health, violence prevention and safety, financial assistance, dentistry, substance abuse, safe and sustainable agricultural practices, educational advancement, and lipid blood profiles. Honoring Our Elders, A Celebration of Life is an annual intergenerational video history project and community celebration held at the Peñasco Independent Schools. Each fall elders from our 13 villages are selected for this project. An Intergenerational Advisory Council is formed to offer guidance. Students from Peñasco high school and middle school develop questions, train in oral interview techniques and learn digital video and still camera skills. The video project coordinator, Patricia Rodriguez, is a local community resident, who is completing her doctoral thesis with Case Western Reserve University on interviewing elders.
